What Is A Capsule Wardrobe & Why Do You Need One?

The capsule wardrobe. Good for the planet. Good for your chic style. Good for your bank account.

It’s the triple threat of the fashion industry and a wardrobe that’ll transform your style into a dreamy, to-die-for vibe.

There’s nothing better, right??

But what is a capsule wardrobe and why do you need one? Let’s take a look!

Capsule Wardrobes: Here For A Good Time Or A Long Time?

The capsule wardrobe has become insanely popular over the last few years, gently nudged into the spotlight alongside Marie Kondo’s minimalist, clutter-less KonMari practices.

As Business Of Fashion explains, “The idea was to create a capsule wardrobe that features only the most essential or influential pieces from a collection. [It] is essentially a condensed version of a designer’s vision, often limited edition, which transcends [fashion] seasons and trends by being functional.”

We can think of it as a minimalist’s guide to a stress-free closet, where they focus on investing in quality pieces that won’t only last longer than your average fast fashion item, but will also remain unaffected by the ever-changing seasonal trends, year in year out.

That’s our kind of wardrobe! And if you don’t believe us yet, check out these dreamy looks from Lauren Parker, Daisy Christina and the only Mihaela Nedeva.

By design, they’re here for a good time and a long time, which is just one of the many reasons it’s time to start curating your collection!

Do I Really Need One?

The point of a capsule wardrobe is simplicity, collating a range of chic staples that form a

cohesive collection.

Aside from being a fashion statement (and a pretty dreamy one at that!), a capsule wardrobe is perfect if you’re trying to save your money and save the environment.

Contrary to popular belief, investing in slow fashion is good for your bank account in the long run. You might invest in a beautiful, quality item for more than you’d spend on a similar item at a fast fashion outlet, but it’ll last you far longer and save you the cost of more frequent replacements.

Good On You reports that the average American throws away more than 35 kilograms of clothes every year (every single year!). These are those fast fashion items that lose shape, tear or fall apart after only a few wears and need to be sent to the Op Shop or thrown in the bin.

Not only does this mean you need to absorb the cost of replacing these fast fashion items (and boy, does that get expensive!), it also means they’re more likely to end up unloved, unworn and in landfill. The Clean Clothes Campaign have found that the garment industry is one of the largest carbon polluters and producers of waste. In 2018, three out of every five of the 100 billion garments made ended up in landfill within a year, contributing to our ever- increasing problem of waste and pollution.

When we opt for a capsule wardrobe, instead of being influenced by the trend of the week (or month, or even year!), we consider where we spend our money and whether they’ll contribute to our re-wearable collections. The purpose of a capsule wardrobe is to choose staples you’ll always return to, which by design reduces the prevalence of fast fashion and all of its un-eco-friendly by products.
